The season-long mission is finally underway. I had been getting an itch to get on with my struggle. Over the years, I have learned to savor opening day and the many faces I haven’t seen in over 6 months. Who cares how many times someone asks “dude! How was your summer?” The people, not the powder, make opening day special!!
Had my thumb out by 7 AM this morning and only a few cars passed before an SUV pulled over and scooped me up. The driver’s name was Matt and he also works up at the hill. I used my usb voice recorder to record the ride. It was really just a test run. The recorder is for when something really crazy happens while hitching. It worked well and will be used any time I can catch someone spazzing out.
You could tell all the locals were happy to get out there and get the monkey off their backs. When you put your whole life into ski season, having no snow is like having no love in your life. You can only hold out for so long. I was happy to work and get a few turns in without having to hike my ass up the hill! The bad news is it is supposed to rain tonight and maybe all day tomorrow. I hope our snowpack holds up!
The way home was also a real treat. Mt. Baker Legend Randy Haugen stopped to pick me up! We had a great chat on the way down. Turns out this is Randy’s 28th season pass! That is an outstanding accomplishment in my book! Great Day!
