10/16/14 Scouting 1st Snowfall
A clear Thursday morning revealed the first major snowfall of the season. Audrey and I caught a ride up with our friend John Allen who was setting out on his own adventure to Indonesia the following day. We hiked through the Mt Baker Ski Area out to Lake Ann after a late start. Along the way Audrey cataloged many different mushrooms including multitudes of amentias. The snowfields on Goat looked promising, but John and I found another area of interest. We spotted a long snowfield on the other side of the Horn underneath the great wall of Table Mountain. With a mere 5 inches we could make a few turns on top of the snowfield without having to worry about rocks.
We had to hustle all day because of our late start, but we didn’t mind. We only relaxed for 10-15 minutes at the lake. Enough time to eat an apple, savor the view, daydream about a cloud shape and then we hightailed back before dark. When we said goodbye to John we knew it would be only for a month, that when he returned it would be snowing and he will have so many stories to tell us!
